Necktie - silkA stain, now what? Before you start cleaning the stain on your necktie, please check the narrow end of the tie. There should be a black label indicating whether the necktie is made of silk or polyester. Is your necktie made of silk? In that case, do not wash it in the washing machine or lukewarm soapy water. Instead, use petroleum ether to treat stains on a silk necktie. Apply a small amount of petroleum ether to a clean cloth and gently dab against the stain. The petroleum ether will absorb the stain. Attention! Do not rub! Is the stain still there? Then roll up your tie and place it in a jar with some petroleum ether. Put a lid on the jar and shake. Leave the tie to soak for about a day. Take out the tie and hang it outside to air and dry, hanging it from the tip (narrowest point) of the tie. This way, the petroleum ether will evaporate and your tie will dry without any creases.Would you like to iron your necktie? Use the lowest setting on your iron and cover the tie with a tea towel, to prevent the silk from melting. Do not iron over the passantino (loop at the back) to prevent shine stains on the front of the tie.Have these instructions not helped? You can take your tie to the dry cleaner’s to have it professionally cleaned. Please note that steaming is not good for silk ties, but it will survive one dry cleaning session.
